Heart of a hero. Mind of an absolute…

‘Why are you pretending, Augusta? Why hide your sentience from your sister?’

The Mosaic watched Simon without reaction, her mouth wet and greasy from the roasted meat-juice. He wanted to wipe those red lips clean with his thumb. Prigg it, he wanted to lick them clean.

He blew out air. ‘Is it that she’d only help you if she thought you were an animal?’

‘Starving God, you’re dense sometimes,’ Hal said. ‘I went through the witness reports with you, remember. She’d only sell her if she thought she was an animal.’

‘Ah, that’s right.’ Simon leant back. ‘You’re one of the girls who get infected on purpose for the money. Baby sister need a new dress?’

‘New wedding dress,’ Hal said around a bite of bread. ‘Needed money for a dowry.’

‘Oh, yes. The dying father, the penniless girls, the rich suitor. It’s like a fairytale, isn’t it, sugar-pie? Is the suitor the coward on the far side of the bridge or did your sister prigg another idiot into helping?’

An implacable virus spreads across the kingdom of Aspermonde, transforming women into beautiful creatures called Mosaics and stealing their minds, souls, and voices. Mosaics are alien, eerie – and collectable.

Lieutenant Simon Cant collects Mosaics for the king. He is war-scarred and unpredictable, held steady only by his loyal sergeant, Hal. Their latest acquisition, Augusta, is proving difficult: she hasn’t yet lost her mind and willpower to the virus.

Maybe it’s a miracle … and maybe it’s just a sackful of trouble for Simon.

All he wants is to get back to Skysend and hand Augusta – and the problem she represents – over to his king. Meanwhile, rebels want to rescue her, a covetous merchant wants to collect her, her sister wants to castrate Simon, and Augusta herself has designs of her own…
